Images for first draft
This image incorporates the acoustic guitar with the scraggy shoes and the pose shows a chilled out atmosphere to show how this genre of music is made.
This shows her love of music with the way she is hugging her guitar to show her love for this instrument and for the music she makes.
This is a comedic image of the artist which could have been a possible contender for the double page spread. This would show the fun, humorous artist behind the music.
This is a mimic of the Ed Sheeran photograph which he has with the word 'hi' on his tongue.
This image shows the vulnerable side of the like she has nothing to hide.
This is the conventional pose for most models on a magazine and one which shows the friendly and down to earth side of the artist.
This pose may be more 'unladylike' and show a no nonsense approach to life.
Another friendly pose which may be another conventional model pose
The head tilt to the side is yet another conventional pose and one which shows a connection with the audience as she builds eye contact with the audience.
This would have been a picture either in the contents page or double page to show the love between the artist and her fans. The shadow of it shows just the heart as the main focus of the picture.

Mock ups
These are mock ups which I created using found images off the Internet. The layouts I have chosen I may use in my draft of my music magazine and therefore find that these mock ups help to see what my own music magazine will look like.

Price and Publishing
The price depends on two things. How frequently is the magazine to be published? weekly, monthly etc and how much can the target audience afford? I have decided that I will publish my magazine weekly which will allow me to incorporate current news in the magazine which will still be current when published. With the magazine being published weekly and my target audience being teens to twenties, I will have to price the magazine quite low.
From doing market research into music magazines I have found out:
Spin magazine is $3.99 which converts to £2.54 in pounds sterling
NME magazine is priced at £2.20
With this information I decided to price my magazine at £2.10 as this is a competitive price for the weekly magazines that are already out there. Also, for my target audience this is variably cheaper and will include the same amount of information than the other magazines, therefore making it a cheaper but better option.

Second front cover analysis
Language: The title of the magazine is "The Fly". My interpretation of why it could be named as such because the magazine focuses on new and upcoming artists/bands that wish to fly and prosper in the music industry. The main cover line "Laura Marling" is the name of the artist which is featured on the front cover and therefore creates anchorage between the image and the cover line. The main image of the magazine is of the artist Laura Marling. In the image she is not made up with make up or has hair extensions, she looks natural and shows off her natural beauty. She wants to be like her music. One critic said of acoustic music "When music is labeled acoustic, unplugged, or unwired, the assumption seems to be that other types of music are cluttered by technology and overproduction and therefore aren't as pure." This could be why she doesn't have the make up or bouffant hair, because she wants to look pure. The website at the top left of the page allows the reader to access more information on the Internet and therefore could expand readership of the magazine. Also with the URL being in the left third, potential readers can see the website even if it is stacked in a magazine stand. The skyline under the main cover line gives more information about the artist featured on the magazine, saying she is the "first lady of folk", which shows us what genre of music she creates and also allows people to see whether or not they would be interested in the article. The other sell lines are of other bands/artists which are featured in the magazine which further emphasizes that this magazine features folk, acoustic indie music.
Institution: "THE FLY" is published by, and is the copyright of, MAMA Group Limited
Ideology: The ideology behind the magazine is to show what up and coming artists are arriving on the music scene in this particular genre and the main image makes sure that people know that it's artists are true and pure and not tangoed wannabe popstars. With the magazine being free it also shows that they want anyone to read it and to show people what great talent is out there. Nobody can resist anything that is free.
Audience: The audience for the magazine would be teens to late twenties with an interest in this particular music genre. I got this by the artists which are featured on the magazine cover and from where it is stocked. When looking at where you could find this magazine in Hull I found that you could find it at:
> HMV
> The Adelphi
> The Lamp
> The Ringside
> The Welly Club
> Hull University
With this I can see what the target audience for this magazine is. With it being in nightclubs and the university I can see that it is for teens to twenties.
Representation: The representation of the magazine is to showcase true, pure talent on its cover. The cover itself is very simple and could suggest that they just want to focus on the artist and their music and not on the showiness and the social life. Its just all about the music. The use if the neutral colours can also correspond to the pureness of the music and artist, it's not too bright or brash.

Second double page spread analysis
Language: With the title of the article being "picture perfect" this could give the impression that the band wants to be seen as a 'perfect' band. This could say how they make their music, they strive for perfection. The title could also coincide with the image as the image seems somewhat staged and done in such a way to make them seem 'perfect'. The introduction to the article gives the reader background information of the band and briefly tells the reader what the article will be about, in this case "...whatever you do, don't say TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB sound like The Wombats...". Going back to the main image and the idea of it being staged, the image could come across as comical as they are seen eating at a picnic, but with glum faces. The name of the band "TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB" is written in capitals and is written in the style recognised by the public and their fans as this is the way it is always written in everything they are featured in.
Institution: "THE FLY" is published by, and is the copyright of, MAMA Group Limited.
Ideology: The ideology behind this double page spread is to inform readers of the band and give information about the band which they mind find interesting and intrusive. Fans of any band want to know the gory details, and so with these types of articles they can find out more about their favourite band and their daily habits, which then makes the band more popular and ultimately gets them to sell more singles, albums and merchandise.
Audience: The audience would be teens to mid-twenties as this is the age group in which listen to the band in the article. As the band is quite and new and modern band, this age group tend to be more in the know about up and coming bands than any other age group. Also the audience will be people who like their indie-pop type of music which the band featured creates because they will be the ones most interested in this article.
Representation: The image of the band represents their serious, yet slightly comical nature and to express how they create their music. The fact that their trademark named logo is incorporated suggests that they are already known in the music world and represents their serious nature to become bigger in the industry. The whole article represents a band that is striving to achieve.
Second contents page analysis
Language: The language used in this contents page are the titles of the articles and the references of where to find them. With the article titles, some of them are quite simple and state what you would expect to see on the page, however some show a different side, such as: "The Quatro with John Kerrison". When researching this I found that it is a regular feature about the current news of the time. This is quite an interesting article as it is someones viewpoint in current issues to do with music. The page title show you what the current issue if the magazine is and tells you it is a contents page.
Institution: "THE FLY" is published by, and is the copyright of, MAMA Group Limited
Ideology: The ideology behind this contents page is to show what the magazine has to offer in terms of articles and artists. It tries to offer a wide selection of bands and artists within the particluar genre to appeal to a potential buyer and also with the inclusion of the regular articles, tries to gain customer loyalty.
Audience: The audience for the magazine would be teens to twenties. I can see this because when researching the magazine I found that you can pick up a copy at various, popular nightclubs in Hull, and also at the University, whihc to me says that it targets the younger age group. Also, lesser known bands, the younger people tend to know a lot more about them than older people as the use of social networking sites and youtube become widly used.
Representation: The representation of this contents page is to show that the most important article is the one that is shown on the front cover, but also is shown by the image on the contents page as the image is the most dominant of the page.

Double page spread analysis
Language: With the title of the article being "serious fun" this oxymoron shows how the band want to be portrayed. With it being an oxymoron it shows that they don't even know who they are. An oxymoron can be used for humorous effect and maybe the band would like to be perceived as a fun, entertaining band. The actual name of the band "Art vs Science" is written in the same font and is the next biggest size on the page after the title of the article. This may be because they want to get their image and representation known before the actual name of the band because people remember faces more than names, but with the fonts being the same it also suggests that they still don't want us to forget who the band is.
Institution: The institution of the double page spread is the same as the front cover from earlier. The magazine is based on an Australian radio station for teens to young adults and is independently owned and published by ABC Magazines by News Custom Publishing.
Ideology: the ideology behind the double page spread is to inform readers of a new band that is appearing on the music scene and to portray them as a new, cool, fun, upcoming band. The way that the main image has been posed shows that they want to create a lasting reputation.
Audience: The audience of the magazine will be teens-mid twenties with a liking to new bands/artists in the indie genre. I can tell this because of the font of the article title and band name, which can be seen as quite comic-book like, and the fact that the band is relatively unknown and when researching the band I found that they tend to create indie music.
Representation: The representation of this double page spread is to show how the band want to be viewed as an entertaining and jokey band. The use of the pop arty font also coincides with this idea of nonsense and the title of the article "serious fun" wraps it all up. Along with the main article and the image it gives off the impression of comical.
Contents page analysis
Langauge: The language used in the contents page are the titles of the articles and the references as to where they can be found. Some of the titles of the contents page are creative such as "Santa's sacked" which then refers to the Christmas presents you can get but also puts across the fact that Santa isn't real. Shows that this contents page comes from an adult, no nonsense magazine. The contents page also includes 'features' and 'regulars' to show that not only do they have articles just for that one magazine issue but they also have articles which run on issue after issue, so that they can ensure loyalty from readers if the regular articles attract people.
Institution: The institution of the magazine is 'Drummer' magazine which Jack Fritscher is editor in chief. As the founding San Francisco editor in chief of Drummer magazine, he was its most frequent contributor as editor, writer, and photographer through all three publishers, emerging as historian of the institutional memory of Drummer, San Francisco's longest-running magazine (1975–1999). At Drummer, he introduced into gay media such artists as Robert Mapplethorpe and David Hurles (Old Reliable), and showcased talents such as Robert Opel, Arthur Tress, Samuel Steward (Phil Andros), Larry Townsend, John Preston, Wakefield Poole, Rex, and A. Jay. (found from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Fritscher)
Ideology: The ideology for this contents page is to show what the magazine has to offer in terms of articles included in the magazine issue. With the images on this page it lets the reader know straight away some of the top bands which are featured in the issue and even if you don't know the name of the band you will definitely know their faces.
Audience: The audience for this contents page is people with rock music taste. I can tell this because of the images used as thumbnails of different rock bands and how the main image is of a drummer, drumming which correlates with rock music and the title of the magazine. I can also tell because of the bands featured in the magazine articles featured in the magazine, such as 'The Kooks' and 'Slayer'.
Representation: The representation of the contents page is to show what can be found in the magazine and that it is of a rock music nature. The featured artists are trying to show that they are rock artists and they do this by appearing in this certain magazine which targets that specific music genre.
Front cover analysis
Language: The title of the magazine is "jmag" and when researching this name I couldn't find what it actually means. I did however find another page where the magazine was called "triple j" and included the same drum logo as on the "jmag" title. "triple j" is an Australian radio station for indie music and therefore the magazine is based on the radio station. The main cover line "Vampire Weekend" is the name of the band that is shown on the front cover and thus includes anchorage between the image and the cover line. The main image is of the band in various poses which shows that they are a fun and nonsensical band. The image is in bright colours and behind a bright yellow background to show the fun and quirky side to themselves and to show the band off as a 'cool' band. The competition at the top of the page draws the reader in. If the prize is good then the audience may likely buy the magazine to enter the competition and win the prize.
Institution: the institution of the magazine is independently owned and published for ABC Magazines by News Custom Publishing. This is an Australian publisher as the magazine is a monthly Australian music magazine and coincides with a youth radio station called "triple j".
Ideology: the ideology behind the magazine is to show the potential reader of what bands are currently popular in this type of genre and to inform them of what the music world is currently like. It also gives the impression of a not too serious magazine with the bright and bold colours and the playful main image.
Audience: The audience of the magazine would be teens to late twenties with a taste in indie/alternative music. This can be derived from the main band mentioned, Vampire Weekend, which is an indie/alternative band and this band is mostly listened to by teens to late twenties people.
Representation: The representation of the magazine is to show that they are are fun, young up to date magazine with bright stars featured on the magazine. With the main picture being as silly and vibrant as it is, it shows the fun side to the magazine. The use of the flower as a prop in the main image represents the happy and unusual things that can happen and all in all it is meant to be viewed as entertaining and jokey.

Genre
The genre of my music magazine will be acoustic indie as this is the music that i prefer and therefore feel comfortable in creating a magazine of that genre.
These are just some of the artists that cover this genre and the genre is created by the soul use of an instrument, predominantly guitar or piano.
Magazines such as NME and Q cover this genre as well as others.
One magazine that predominantly covers new music is The Fly. Laura Marling has been featured on the front cover of The Fly and is a massive force in new music.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of own work
When thinking of the language of the front cover I had to first think about the masthead and what the title of the magazine would be. I chose college life because I felt that it had a mix of education and social life and that is what college is seen to be about. The main image of the front cover is a MCU of a student and the anchorage between the image and the main cover line is clear as it mentions her name and you can see a clear link between them. The colour scheme of the magazine is purple, black and white. This is more prominent now as before I overloaded on the purple and things became unclear so from the feedback i received from my drafts I made sure that I broke the colour up and therefore kept to my colour scheme and put the sell lines in purple and the skylines in white. The thumbnail image which I included on the cover relates to the article "Do you love reading...?" and so it clearly links to the article. After getting feedback from my first draft I decided to add a teasing contents along the bottom of the cover as this will help to say what else can be found in the magazine so that a potential buyer can witness all that can be found in the magazine. I decided that the price will be £1 because it is enough for students to afford and enough for the magazine to make a profit. The free revision tips poster will hopefully entice the students to buy the magazine as this will really help with the upcoming January exams and essay writing for important coursework.
The institution of the magazine is the college itself because I am the one who will create the magazine and I am at student at the college and the college will print the magazine to sell. The college will then collect and use any profit that it gains from the magazine to improve certain parts of the college to further improve the education of the students.
The ideology behind the magazine was to show that education is key at college and that you can succeed and achieve wherever is possible. I wanted to show that although education is the most important part to college, you can have a social life to and they are portrayed in the problem page of the magazine.
The audience for the magazine is Wyke students aged 16-19 because the college features articles about Wyke and the students that study there and the successes that students achieve. The students will feel that the magazine articles will be relevant to them and that will make the magazine unique as there isn't another magazine that focuses on the things that go in within the college.
I want my magazine to represent the achievements of the students and how the college is a great place to learn with the friendly atmosphere and the social environment. I want to portray the fact that the college offers a great education for students and that they can get you the best grades possible if you strive to work hard to get them. With the images showing the happiness and the social atmosphere of the college, it represents the great environment for work and shows the college to be a great place to study.

Promoting the launch of the magazine
The magazine will be launched not only in print form but also via the Internet. Students will get and email to say that when the magazine date launch will be and all the information about the first issue and what they can fins within the magazine. Also there will be adverts around the college of all the information that the magazine will give. With it being launched on the Internet, the link to the magazine will be on the moodle homepage and therefore whenever a student wants to go on the Internet they will be able to see the advert for the new magazine if they see it often enough they will remember the date and hopefully either buy a copy or read it online.
With it being both on the Internet and in printed form there is a slight worry that because it is free to read on the Internet that the students would rather read it on the Internet and not buy a printed copy. However with the printed copy students will be able to get free gifts with it. In the first issue you can get a free revision tips poster which you cannot get on the Internet version of the magazine. Also with the printed version there will be money off coupons on the back page of the magazines for future Wyke parties so students can therefore get their tickets cheaper.
With the magazine launched in two different forms this will gain a larger reading audience and therefore students who read the magazine on the Internet may decide to buy the printed version for that weeks free gift. This may gain a profit for the magazine.

Final front cover design
This is my final front cover design. I used the feedback from the drafts to improve and add certain things in order to create a final cover. I added a teasing contents across the bottom to show what else you can find in the magazine. I also broke the purple down a bit as it was a bit overloaded with purple so put the skylines in white to still follow the colour scheme but to also make it easier to read and not overbearing. I kept the background from draft one as I felt this background showed the college off more as you can clearly see the lockers and the people socialising. Also you can see artwork on the walls which can link to the second sell line of "Top award for art student" . The main MCU image also links with the main cover line as the student tells us about how she settled into college.
Contents page mock up
This is the mock up of the contents page. I have continued the colour scheme of purple and white into the contents page to provide consistency. I have also included images to make the contents page look more appealing and to break up the text. All the images link to an article and all the articles are listed clearly so people can quickly and easily find the page they want.

Draft 2
This is my second draft. I used the feedback from my first draft and carried forward the ideas into to second draft. I have now added a teasing contents along the bottom which say what else can be found in the magazine and included more interesting articles. I have kept the free gift but changed it to a revision poster instead of a periodic table because more people will benefit from the revision tips poster than the periodic table. I have used the same student but changed the location to see which location would be best on my final front cover.

Draft using my images
This is a draft of my college magazine. I will use this draft to help me to create a final front cover. In this draft I used a lot of purple to signify the Wyke theme running throughout as it is about Wyke college. The reader can easily see the MCU image included and therefore feels included within the magazine. The price is clearly displayed at the top right and the sell lines in the third left. The sell lines feature with a skyline to briefly describe what that particular article is about. Having articles such as "top award for art student" shows the success the college has and how the students strive to achieve. There are articles for everyone in this magazine, from art, to settling in, to reading. I could have however made the anchorage stronger by actually linking the person on the front cover with the main cover line. I may try and do this in my next draft.
