Choice of college, target audience and price
My choice of college to feature in the preliminary task will be Wyke college because not only is it a very appealing building anyway now that it has been redeveloped but also it has many facilities in the college that students will find useful and accommodating. Wyke college is the perfect college to showcase the many achievements of the students and to show students how good the college is.
The target audience for the magazine will be 16-19 year old students within the college. This is because they will be the ones who will benefit from the magazine the most. The magazine will feature a lot of useful articles on how to write an essay or organise your workload. However it will also feature problem pages and advice pages to help with the social aspect of college too. As many students suffer with work if their social lives are affected. This is why the magazine will be a mix of education based articles and social/personal based articles to get a wider reading audience. The magazine is aimed at students at demographic E level and want to realise self actualisation.
The price depends on two things. How frequently is the magazine to be published? weekly, monthly etc and how much can the target audience afford? I have decided that I will publish my magazine weekly which will allow me to incorporate current news in the magazine which will still be current when published. With the magazine being published weekly and my target audience being college students I will have to price the magazine quite low.
From doing market research into college magazines I have found out:
"College" magazine boasted that they were 100% free
"College Lifestyle" is $5.99 which in pound sterling is £3.79
This is a big difference in price from a magazine being free to one which is £3.79. If i were to offer my magazine free of charge I would not make any profit from it and therefore it would be a diseconomy of scale. However I do not want to sell my magazine at £3 or more because this would seem expensive to the student popular. Therefore I have decided to sell my magazine at £1 because this is not too expensive, every student will have a pound lying around somewhere, and it is not too cheap as to lose money.

L.I.I.A.R ANALYSIS
Language: the title of the magazine 'College' tells us that the magazine is at aimed at college students. The masthead is quite large which shows how important college is not only to the institution but to the students as well. The main cover line " NYC'S Fresher Fashion CEO" uses alliteration to make the cover line snappy and interesting. The cover line connects with the image in that the woman is the CEO and one of her fashion pieces is behind her to make sure the reader sees the anchorage. Also another cover line is "ABC's Family Greek" which refers to an upcoming TV programme about college life. The use of colour for the word Greek and making it larger than the text surrounding it suggest that the institution wanted the word to be noticed. The use of the '∑' for the letter 'e' relates to the college houses.
Institution: The institution of the magazine is the college itself. They produce the magazine and therefore decide which articles will be featured and which wont. If a major publishing company published this magazine, they would lose money as there wont be enough readers to make them a profit. Keeping it low scale and within the college will make the magazine more successful with the college students.
Ideology: The ideology behind this magazine is to show the students of the college what they could achieve if they put there mind to it, with the image of the woman and one of her fashion pieces. This will attract students to read more and to find out how they could be successful just like her.
Audience: The audience of this magazine is generally students because as the title suggests 'college' this magazine is solely based for college students. Although it may not have to be the students of a specific college. Other students from other colleges may be interested in the magazine as it may raise some issues that they would be interested about.
Representation: The magazine represents the achievement ion which the college students could rise to. With the main cover line being linked with the success of a former college student it shows how anyone can achieve what they want in life. The fact that the title of the magazine is 'College' shows that you can achieve your dream by going to college and learning the right skills to achieve. It also shows how education and commitment is important to ensure success.

L.I.I.A.R ANALYSIS
Language: the title of the magazine being 'College lifestyle', gets across that this magazine is a college magazine and for students. The word 'college' being in a bigger text size than lifestyle gives the impression that the magazine is more focused on the education side of college rather than the lifestyle side, however the lifestyle is still mentioned.
The cover line "Dancehall's dance future" links to the image because the image is of Jeffrey 'assassin' Campbell. The magazine suggests that Jeffrey is an upcoming star.
Institution: The institution of the magazine is the college itself. If a publisher published the magazine it wouldn't get the readers it needs and therefore would make a loss. The college can publish it internally to their students and would hopefully attract a number of student readers and therefore make a profit.
Ideology:The ideology behind this magazine is to explain to the reader what is happening at the college and the main cover line is a preview of what can be expected in the magazine. The various other cover lines explain what other stories can be expected to be in the magazine.
Audience: The audience for this magazine is students at college. You can tell this because of the magazines title 'College lifestyle' and the model is holding a law textbook which suggests education and A level education, therefore college students. The magazine is to inform college students about the different things which can help them in their college life and the lifestyle that is being offered to them.
Representation: The representation of the magazine is to show how college is all about the education. The model is represented as an educated student who studies business and law and shows that its not all about the lifestyle. The fact that 'lifestyle' is in a smaller size than 'college' represents the meaning of college, and that is education.

Conventions of a Magazine
Masthead: The masthead is the magazines title. It is usually placed in the top left corner because of the way the magazines are placed on a magazine shelf in a shop.
Dateline: A dateline is a brief piece of text included in news articles that describes where and when the story occurred, or was written or filed.
Barcode: Read electronically and decoded into usable information.
Sell lines: sell whats inside the magazine
Cover lines: headlines of the magazine
Left Third: this is where the sell lines are placed. The left third of the magazine cover is vital for sales in shops where the magazine is not shown full-frontage. The title must be easily recognisable in a display of dozens of competitors. The start of the masthead is important here, as are short cover lines that are easy to read.
Splash: the splash is the whole front page
Kicker: the kicker is a short phrase found set above the headline. Usually set in a smaller type than the headline, the kicker can serve as an introduction or as a type of section heading to identify a regular column, for instance.
Anchorage: gives the image meaning
Graphology: Graphical shaps to highlight feature(s)
Colour scheme: specific/stylistic/thematic types
Screamers: A screamer is a distinctive headline which has been written with the goal of drawing attention to the article beneath it. Screamers demand attention, insisting that readers turn to the article in question immediately and without delay.
Images: size: close up to medium close up. Ranges from one main image to x amount featuring one main image and smaller images. Helps make the page look more interesting. It can add understanding of a story and/or entice someone to read the magazine.
